Dr. Valter Longo
Longevity Researcher
Valter Longo, Ph.D. is the Edna M. Jones Professor of Gerontology and Biological Sciences and Director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California. He is also the Director of the Longevity and Cancer Program at the IFOM Institute of Molecular Oncology in Milan. Dr. Longo received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from UCLA and completed postdoctoral training in neurobiology of aging under Roy Walford. His research focuses on the fundamental mechanisms of aging and on dietary interventions that promote longevity and reduce age-related diseases. He is the creator of the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), a plant-based diet that tricks the body into a fasting state while still providing nutrition. His work has shown that periodic fasting can promote stem cell regeneration, reduce inflammation, and extend healthspan. Dr. Longo has published over 130 papers in top journals and his book 'The Longevity Diet' presents his research on how specific diets can promote healthy aging. He continues to lead groundbreaking research on the connections between nutrients, fasting, genes, aging, and diseases in mice and humans.
- Developed the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) for longevity
- Pioneered research on caloric restriction and aging
- Identified key nutrient-sensing pathways that regulate aging
- Demonstrated fasting's ability to promote stem cell regeneration
“Aging is the highest risk factor for most diseases, so we should focus on that.”
“Periodic fasting can reprogram the body to a more youthful state.”
“The right diet can add years to your life and life to your years.”
